When a Mentorship Session Turns Into Something Really Special
As a Miami family photographer, some sessions just have a way of surprising you. This one started as a teaching moment and turned into one of my favorite shoots in a long time. I mentor photographers one-on-one, and for the hands-on portion of the program, we set up a styled shoot so my student could practice in a real, dynamic environment. She wanted to focus on family — the kind that feels alive and real, not stiff or posed. So we called in the most generous family to bring it all to life.

What Miami Family Photography Actually Looks Like
I cannot say enough about what it means when a family shows up and just trusts you. Elisa brought her whole world — her kids, her husband, a sleeping newborn tucked right against her chest — and they were so themselves from the very first frame.
There was no “okay everyone look here and smile.” There was a vintage Jeep Wagoneer, laidback outfits, a wide-brimmed hat, boys being boys, and a mama sitting on the ground holding her newest baby like she was the whole universe.
That is the stuff I live for as a Miami family photographer. The real moments. The ones that feel a little editorial but also completely unfiltered.
The Vibe We Were Going For
When we talked about the vision for this shoot, we knew we wanted something that felt effortless. Not coordinated-to-death. Not Pinterest-perfect in a forced way. Just a family that looks like them, in an environment that let their personality breathe.
The Wagoneer was everything. That woody panel detail, the open door, the way the boys just naturally gravitated toward it — it gave the whole shoot this incredible texture and nostalgia without us having to try too hard.
Black and white was a natural choice for editing. It stripped everything back and let the emotion take over. The connection, the chaos, the tenderness of a newborn in the middle of it all.
What This Shoot Was Really About
Part of my mentorship program is getting into the field together — not just talking theory, but actually shooting alongside each other so I can teach in the moment.
For this session, my student got to watch how I read a family, how I direct without over-directing, and how I find the light and the frame even when everything is moving at once. Kids do not stop for you. Newborns have their own agenda. Dads are wrangling toddlers. And somehow, in all of that beautiful chaos, the best images happen.
That is the thing about family photography. You are not controlling the moment. You are chasing it.
